Breville 876 / Sage Barista Express Impress: learning with fresh beans

My Breville 876 keeps the counter clean with assisted tamping. But as I work through a bag of beans, I keep having to adjust the grind finer.

A new coffee corner and a first bag of beans

As a beginner, I wanted the fun of making coffee myself without something too complicated. So I bought a semi-automatic toy: the Breville 876.

I tried a few cups to dial in the beans when I started it up. After that, the routine was mostly automated and the results reasonably consistent. Later I discovered how much this machine cares about bean freshness: towards the end of the bag, I have to keep making the grind finer.

Grinding, brewing and frothing in one machine is the appeal. Automatic dosing and assisted tamping are very useful. Grounds don’t fly around, so the counter stays clean and easy to look after.

My first everyday bag was the much-talked-about Blue Bottle. The recipe presented as official was 20 g of beans, 30–38 seconds and 16 g of espresso out. I had to set the grinder to 3 to get close to that recommendation, but the flavour did come through. For most beans, wouldn’t around 30 g out in 25 seconds count as reasonably consistent? For my own lattes, I prefer a one-to-one ratio.

For a part-time coffee hobbyist like me, it’s enough to play with, and saves time and effort. I wouldn’t recommend it to professionals who are much more particular about flavour and mouthfeel.

Choosing for everyday use

The Breville 876 owner still adjusted the grind as their beans aged. Owners of BES876 (US) or Sage SES876 (UK) may also need to adjust the grind as beans age; this account does not establish performance for every regional variant. The owner’s repeated grind changes are more informative than any one dial number.

The owner reports using 20 g of coffee for 16 g of espresso and cites 30–38 seconds and 16 g out as “official” parameters alongside her Blue Bottle beans, but provides no link or identifiable official document allowing that claim to be independently checked. They also mention a one-to-one latte ratio without saying which ingredients or measurements it uses. Those details are too incomplete to copy reliably. Record dose, beverage weight and taste for your own beans before copying a dial setting.

Breville describes the BES876’s dose calculation as learning from the previous grind and tamp. The owner reports a clean counter with the assisted dosing and tamping routine, while still choosing beans, grind and drink proportions. The photos show the coffee corner, the machine and its accessories.
