Breville 876 / Sage Barista Express Impress: a beginner gets started

I switched from weak drip coffee to the Breville 876. Assisted tamping makes my first attempts easier, while I'm still working out the grind settings.

Fresh grounds in the portafilter beneath the dosing outlet.
Chinese labels beside the dose and tamp indicators.
Two glasses beneath the portafilter at the start of a shot.
Espresso beginning to flow into the glasses.
Espresso flowing from both portafilter spouts.

My first few tries with the 876

After moving into my new home, I kept wanting a new coffee machine. The coffee from my old American-style drip coffee maker tasted too weak.

I initially wanted a fully automatic machine for convenience, but a friend recommended a semi-automatic as the better choice. After looking at lots of brands, I finally bought the Breville 876.

What I like so far

  1. Assisted tamping, with an indicator light. I don’t need to buy a distribution tool, which suits a beginner like me.
  2. Quick startup: preheating generally takes less than a minute for me.
  3. A stainless-steel exterior that looks good.
  4. I’d allowed for a 10 A power connection at the sideboard, and this fitted my setup.

I’ve tried it a few times since buying it. A semi-automatic really does give me more to play with, and more flavour. My grind setting is currently 13; I’m working it out gradually.

Choosing for everyday use

The owner liked the assisted tamping and indicator light on their Breville 876. Its assisted dosing and tamping system is also found on BES876 (US) and Sage SES876 (UK). The lever assists tamping; it does not turn this into a fully automatic milk-drink machine. You still move the portafilter and steam milk.

The owner’s 10 A connection is specific to their installation. The US manual rates its version at 120 V, 60 Hz, 1750 W, while the UK SES876 manual gives 220–240 V, 50–60 Hz, 1560–1850 W. Match the rating label to your supply; a plug adapter does not change the voltage.

Grind 13 and “under a minute” describe this owner’s first trials. They are useful signs of a manageable learning process, not a universal recipe or a measurement of the temperature of every brewing component.
