Breville 876 / Sage Barista Express Impress: 18 months at home

After 18 months with my Breville 876, I wish I'd bought it sooner. Breakfast is easier, though the steam feels weak and filters and cleaner add up.

Eighteen months after buying the BES876BSS

When I first got into coffee, I used a moka pot and a milk frother. Every morning meant assembling things, watching the heat and sometimes overcooking the coffee, followed by lots of cleaning. Then I moved to capsules: easy and convenient, but the capsule cost added up. That got me thinking about buying a coffee machine.

My conclusion? I regret not buying it earlier. I’ve been extremely happy over this year and a half, and breakfast has improved enormously. It’s so convenient that I feel a beginner can get going in three minutes, with practically no mistakes.

Using my everyday beans from Sam’s Club, an iced Americano at home costs me about 2 yuan. It feels like the running-cost difference between a petrol car and an electric car. Add fresh milk for a latte and it’s about 6–7 yuan. I’ve finally got the freedom to make coffee whenever I like.

What works for me

It’s beginner-friendly: I feel I can make lattes and Americanos without failures, even starting from zero. The built-in automatic grinding keeps grounds from flying around, and upkeep is convenient. It looks good too.

What could be better

The steam feels a little underpowered for frothing milk. Cleaning liquid and water filters aren’t cheap. The machine needs regular cleaning and filter replacement, so consumable costs are relatively high.

The price was over 5,800 (currency not specified in the post). I’d happily recommend it to beginners or coffee lovers who want simplicity. I wish I’d started enjoying it sooner.

Choosing for everyday use

This BES876BSS owner valued a shorter breakfast routine. That experience is useful for buyers considering the BES876 (US) or Sage SES876 (UK), for buyers who want to make milk drinks at home. The owner compares this 18-month experience with two earlier methods, while making clear that steam power and consumables are compromises.

Calculate your own cost per drink using your bean dose, local bean and milk prices, and the drinks you actually make. The owner’s estimates of 2 yuan and 6–7 yuan do not itemise electricity, filters, cleaning supplies or the purchase price, so they are not a complete ownership-cost calculation.

The UK manual lists cleaning tablets, a cleaning disc, a water-filter assembly and descaling powder among the accessories. Compare ongoing local supply costs as well as the machine price. A convenient daily workflow does not remove periodic maintenance.

The original post also included a retailer description, with claims about the Impress system and steaming. That marketing language is separate from the owner’s experience of modest steam power.
