Kärcher MTK 20: grease-cleaning notes for SC 3 Deluxe Home buyers

My Kärcher MTK 20 shifted old grease from the hob, but the grip felt far too hot and the brush was a mess to clean. I give the experience six out of ten.

I expected too much from the steam cleaner

I’d wanted one for a long time. While visiting Sam’s Club at the weekend, I found the new Kärcher steam cleaner for less than the official flagship store and bought it straight away.

That evening I cleaned the hob. It really was good at removing grease, including a lot of old build-up, but I found several problems.

  1. The finish seemed rough when I unpacked it. There were moulding remnants on the handheld part, which wasn’t smooth and felt cheap. Moving the child lock and setting slider took effort.
  2. Hot, hot, hot! Even with two layers of nitrile and rubber gloves and a dishcloth wrapped around it, the handheld grip still felt too hot.
  3. The brush was very difficult to clean after old grease and grime stuck to it. It was a complete mess.
  4. Some crevices still weren’t properly cleaned, including around the gas burner openings. Don’t ask why I tried those—I saw other cleaning creators doing it!
  5. I found it effective only on stains such as grease that benefit from high heat. For dust, scale and similar dirt, I’d still recommend chemical products. That’s common sense, but those satisfying promotional cleaning videos are persuasive.

In the end, I think my expectations were too high. I’d give the actual experience 6 out of 10.

Choosing for everyday use

The MTK 20 removed grease from this owner’s hob, but the brush then needed cleaning and the handle felt uncomfortably hot. When trying the related SC 3 Deluxe Home (Ireland), assess grip comfort and brush cleanup as well as dirt removal.

A grip that still feels very hot despite the reported precautions warrants asking the seller or Kärcher about the specific unit. Adding layers of gloves is not a diagnosis or a reliable remedy for a grip that still feels very hot. As a precaution, ask the seller or Kärcher to assess the specific unit before further use if that behaviour occurs.

The box’s bacteria-removal percentage is manufacturer marketing, with no test conditions visible in the photograph. The owner’s hob-cleaning session provides no verification of that percentage. Likewise, the account does not tell us whether steam is suitable for a particular gas burner; follow the hob manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

When comparing a local machine, consider trigger effort, grip comfort and how brushes will be cleaned after greasy jobs, as well as the main unit’s advertised steam performance.
