Whisker Litter-Robot 4: a curious cat exposed a cleaning-cycle trade-off

I placed my Litter-Robot 4 behind my desk, where my curious cat interrupted cleaning twice; it controlled odor well, but required compatible litter.

A high-angle view of a large white spherical automatic litter box placed on a wooden floor. Inside the litter box, a brown tabby and white cat crouches on the grey cat litter. Outside, a black-and-white tuxedo cat sits on the attached entry ramp looking toward the interior. A black textured litter mat with a small fish toy lies beside the ramp on the floor.
A black cat sits on the ramp of a white automatic globe-style cat litter box, looking inside at the grey litter. In the background on the hardwood floor sits a stainless steel litter box and storage containers.

Because my home is small and I work from home, I placed the LR4 I bought last week 20 cm (about 8 in) behind my desk. During the first two days, I was working when I heard the LR4 rotating. Then it stopped, and a steady stream of feces odor began drifting into my nose. I turned around and saw my big boy poking his head around in front of the LR4, which had conveniently rotated to expose the position of the waste. After torturing my nose and brain for five minutes, I had to carry him away from the LR4 and start a manual cycle. Today, the same thing happened again: while I was working, my big boy was once more poking around and pawing at the LR4 as it cleaned. To stop him from defecating on the litter screen—yes, it had rotated to that position—I had to pick him up again. He kept whining and trying to look back at the LR4 while it was operating. I really did not know whether to laugh or cry.

Apart from that, I can give the LR4 full marks. It really produces almost no odor and frees up my hands. There was no way around the litter issue: I had previously used pine litter, but the LR4 cannot use it. After I started using the LR4, my cat never went back to the pine-litter box. Apparently, the feel of pine litter really was not comfortable for him.

The owner's main trade-off

The owner placed the Litter-Robot 4 about 20 cm (approximately 8 in) behind a desk and encountered two similar interruptions during the first week: a curious cat approached while the unit was cleaning, the cycle stopped, and the owner noticed strong odor from the exposed waste position. This is a reported experience with that placement and cat, not a general odor or safety result for every home.

The same owner reports that, outside those interruptions, the Litter-Robot 4 produced almost no odor and reduced hands-on work. The account supports a strong convenience benefit for this household, while the single early experience does not establish long-term performance.

Litter compatibility matters

The owner's previous pine litter could not be used in the Litter-Robot 4, and the cat subsequently stopped using the separate pine-litter box. Whisker's official FAQ favors standard-weight clumping clay and says absorbent wood pellets and loose-clumping plant litters do not work, so buyers should confirm that their preferred litter is compatible before switching.

Curious cats and interrupted cycles

The owner manually started another cycle after carrying the cat away. Whisker's support guidance says a cycle can be started, paused or resumed, and that a red cat-detection condition should be resolved with the cat safely clear and the sensors unobstructed rather than bypassed. The official manual also says not to address a curious cat by disabling detection.

For the EU model, the cleaning delay can be adjusted up to 30 minutes, but that setting is not presented as a solution for a cat that approaches during operation. The manual recommends keeping a familiar litter box available during acclimation and removing it only after reliable voluntary use.

What to check before buying

Check the local model listing, power requirements, app connection and support terms rather than transferring assumptions from another market. The US listing specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, a 15 V DC supply and one year of base warranty coverage; selected plans or bundles can differ, and those US terms do not establish EU or China-market coverage.

The Litter-Robot 4 should stand on a firm, level surface with no mat partly beneath it. If servicing is needed, the manual says to unplug the unit first and never wet the bonnet or base. These setup and maintenance limits are especially relevant when choosing a compact position near a desk or other frequently occupied area.
