Neakasa M1: DIY leak and litter-scatter fixes, with M1 Plus buying context

I added mesh, tape and a PVC barrier to my older Neakasa M1 to reduce urine leaks and scattered litter. Here’s how the modifications worked for me.

My Neakasa M1 splash-guard modifications

Open-top litter boxes are great in every way, but cats can easily carry litter everywhere on their “comet legs,” everyone! Aren’t you tired of picking up “comet litter” around the box every day? And what about the nightmare of a cat urinating right against the edge, with the urine seeping into the bottom of the box where it is impossible to scrape clean?

I had the same problem before! That was until I gave my Neakasa M1 litter box a small upgrade. Now I can finally go barefoot without worrying! I’ll share my modification idea—it is so simple it makes me want to cry!

A Yibao litter-box chamber modification to prevent urine leaking at the edges and litter being kicked out. First, clean the litter-box chamber thoroughly, making sure it is clean and free of residue for the steps that follow. Prepare the tools and materials: a mesh sheet for mineral litter; tofu litter does not require a mesh modification, cable ties, waterproof tape, sheet material, and a PVC sheet for splash protection. Because I use mineral litter, the holes in the original filter are fairly large, so some small urine clumps cannot be filtered out. I replaced it with a mesh sheet suitable for mineral litter.

Step one: remove the litter-box chamber, then take off its filter mesh and attach the replacement mesh with cable ties. Step two: determine where to place the double-sided adhesive PVC sheet. Check the areas where litter is most likely to splash, such as the entry and exit side and the side where litter is thrown upward. Usually, place the splash guard inside the opening and on the upper-middle section of the bowl wall, then stick the sheet to the bowl.

Then secure the entire sheet with waterproof tape. Step three: wrap waterproof tape all the way around the areas of the protective liner that could leak urine or litter. After applying the waterproof tape, reinstall the filter mesh. The litter-box chamber retrofit is now complete. Put the modified chamber back in the main unit, add litter, and turn it on. It will work perfectly. My 6-kilogram large cat uses it very well.

Models in your region

The owner identifies the product as the first-generation Neakasa M1 with a removable inner liner, while the current official EU and US listings identify the updated Neakasa M1 Plus. The owner’s modification and leakage experience belongs to the older M1 and should not be treated as a test of M1 Plus upgrades.

What the owner changed

The owner’s problem was twofold: mineral litter was scattered around the open entrance, and urine near the edge could seep into the bottom of the older M1. The owner’s video shows a finer mineral-litter mesh attached with cable ties, a PVC splash guard, and waterproof tape around potential leak points.

This is an individual DIY account, not a validated modification guide. The owner reports that their 6-kilogram cat used the modified box well, but long-term durability, safety and suitability for other litter types or cats remain unconfirmed.

Litter and maintenance implications

The owner chose the replacement mesh because the original filter openings let some small mineral-litter urine clumps pass through. The owner says tofu litter does not need this mesh change, so the modification is tied to their litter choice rather than a universal requirement.

The owner’s process begins with fully cleaning the chamber, then removing and reinstalling the filter after the mesh and tape work. Adding tape and a PVC sheet may create extra surfaces to inspect and clean; the source does not report how often they need replacement or whether residue accumulates there.

How this relates to current regional models

The current EU Neakasa M1 Plus is listed as an open-top automatic litter box with app tracking, Pull & Wrap waste disposal, six sets of infrared sensors, an added odor-sealing strip, and a leak-prevention layer. Those advertised updates belong to M1 Plus and should not be credited to the older M1 owner’s product or assumed to eliminate the same leak problem.

The current US listing also identifies the product as Neakasa M1 Plus with app monitoring and Pull & Wrap waste disposal. US and EU buyers should verify the selected bundle and local support terms at checkout; the owner’s older-M1 modification does not confirm the behavior of either regional M1 Plus listing.

The official EU listing states that M1 Plus supports clumping litter, accepts particles up to 3 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length, and has 7.17 L litter capacity and 11.23 L waste capacity. These specifications are for M1 Plus, not measurements of the owner’s first-generation M1, so buyers should confirm the exact regional model before comparing them.

Buying and use cautions

If edge leakage or scattered litter is the deciding issue, treat the owner’s tape, PVC and mesh arrangement as a case study rather than a recommended universal alteration. Any change should be checked against the exact chamber design, litter type and cleaning routine, because the source provides no safety or durability testing.
