Neakasa M1+: testing edge urination and cleaning the open-top chamber
I tested the Neakasa M1+ with an edge-urinating cat and found no leakage, while its open design and app made daily litter care easier.
After comparing several automatic litter boxes on the market, I ultimately bought the Neakasa M1+. If you are also deciding which automatic litter box to choose, where to put it, whether it will smell, or which litter to use, you can save this post for reference.
✅ Open-top design: safer and more acceptable to cats
This litter box stays open throughout and never closes, giving cats 360-degree visibility. Timid cats, kittens and large cats weighing 20 jin (about 10 kg) can use it without becoming stressed. It combines six sets of infrared sensors, gravity sensing and an anti-pinch structure; the machine stops as soon as a cat approaches, so I also feel comfortable using it in a multi-cat household.
✅ Does an automatic litter box smell strongly? The key is sealing
The waste compartment has a seamless odor-blocking seal. After a cat uses the toilet, the box automatically covers and clears the waste. Its 11 L sealed waste compartment automatically closes the garbage bag when the drawer is pulled out, so I do not worry about odors even when placing it in the living room of a small home.
✅ Seamless litter chamber helps prevent urine leaks
The one-piece litter chamber has no joins or seams. In my test, even a cat that likes to urinate against the edge did not cause leakage. It is also compatible with mainstream litters such as tofu litter and mineral litter.
✅ Smart app management: less stress when I am away
The app supports recognition of multiple cats, letting me check each cat's weight and toilet records, clean remotely and adjust the operating mode. For a short trip of three to four days, I basically do not need to worry about the litter box's hygiene.
✅ Where should I put an automatic litter box?
I suggest placing an automatic litter box in a well-ventilated, quiet area that the cat can enter and leave freely, such as a balcony, a corner of the living room or a separate living area.
Taking safety, odor control, smart functions and cleaning into account, this open-top litter box perfectly solves most of the problems of keeping cats and is an all-in-one choice for owners who want to scoop less.

What the owner's test does—and does not—establish
The owner reports that a cat that urinates against the edge did not cause leakage during the owner's test, attributing this to the one-piece, seam-free litter chamber. That is an individual use result, not a guarantee for every cat, litter depth or cleaning condition. The official US listing describes upgraded sealing as preventing up to 95% of leakage under stated testing, rather than preventing every leak.
The owner presents the open design as suitable for timid cats, kittens and cats up to about 10 kg. This is a general claim in the post; the source does not establish that those groups were tested or that the owner has a 10 kg cat. The official EU product lists a 1–15 kg supported cat range, but that regional specification should not be treated as proof that the owner's China-market unit has identical limits.
Litter, sensors and safety
The owner's account says the machine worked with tofu and mineral litter and describes infrared sensing, weight sensing and anti-pinch protection. For the regional M1 Plus, the EU comparison lists six pairs of infrared sensors and four weight sensors. The US listing specifically permits clumping scoopable litter and prohibits non-clumping litter, so buyers should check the local instructions rather than assume every litter named in the owner's account is supported by every regional version.
The owner describes the open layout as offering more visibility. The post does not establish that every timid cat or kitten will accept it. It also means placement matters: the owner recommends a quiet, ventilated location with unrestricted entry and exit, such as a balcony, living-room corner or separate living area.
Cleaning and time away
The owner says the app can recognize multiple cats, show individual weights and toilet records, start remote cleaning and change modes. The account describes a three- to four-day trip as generally manageable for hygiene, but this is the owner's expectation rather than a verified unattended-care interval.
The official EU page presents the manufacturer’s storage interval of up to 14 days conditionally. Daily checks and animal care remain necessary; that is editorial guidance, not a promise that the box permits unattended care. The US listing advises supervised manual cleaning in Kitten Mode for cats below 1 kg. The photographed Pull & Wrap bag uses a drawstring; the post does not demonstrate a motorized bag-sealing mechanism.
Odor control and regional capacity
The owner attributes odor control to the sealed waste compartment, automatic covering and an automatically closing bag when the drawer is pulled out. The EU regional specification gives the M1 Plus an 11.23 L waste capacity, close to but not identical with the 11 L figure in the owner's account; capacity alone cannot establish how odor control will perform in a particular home.
For a local purchase, confirm the exact model, bundle and power or accessory requirements before ordering. Exact hardware equivalence between the owner’s China-market unit and the regional M1 Plus versions is unconfirmed.
