NETGEAR Orbi RBK852: PlayStation Portal latency notes for Orbi 770 buyers
I tested PlayStation Portal over an Orbi RBK852 access point with my PS5 wired to the main router. This setup gave me latency of about 30 milliseconds.
The test environment was as follows
- ASUS AC86U router — I used it as the main router, providing a stable and powerful network connection, with QoS set to Game mode.
- NETGEAR Orbi RBK852 flagship Wi-Fi 6 — I used it as an access point for the mesh network, helping wireless devices connect efficiently.
- NETGEAR switch — I used it to connect the PS5, with a network cable running directly to the main router.
- PlayStation Portal — I connected it to the wireless network through the RBK852 for a high-speed gaming experience.
- PS5 console — I connected it by cable to the NETGEAR switch, then by cable to the main router, giving this setup a stable gaming connection with low latency of about 30 milliseconds.
In theory, I should still be able to optimise it to below 20 milliseconds.
If anyone would like me to test something, feel free to leave a comment. I will test it according to the requirements.

The owner identifies the tested access point as the NETGEAR Orbi RBK852, used behind an ASUS RT-AC86U rather than as the main router. The US official product is the same RBK852 two-pack, while the UK reference is the newer Orbi 770 RBE772; it is a related option, not a confirmed equivalent or a guarantee of the same Portal latency.

The owner tested it in access-point mode behind an ASUS RT-AC86U, so the reported latency is not an RBK852-only result. |

What the owner actually tested
The owner reported approximately 30 milliseconds while streaming to a PlayStation Portal through the RBK852. The setup combined an ASUS RT-AC86U as the main router, the RBK852 as an access point, a wired switch, and a PS5 connected by Ethernet, so this is a whole-network observation rather than an isolated router benchmark.
The accompanying latency demonstration shows the Portal held in front of a monitor displaying a millisecond timer. It is useful evidence of the owner's local test, but it does not establish the result for every home, game, internet service or network layout.
Why the wired PS5 connection matters
In this setup, the PS5 was wired through the NETGEAR switch to the main router, while the Portal used Wi-Fi through the RBK852. That separates the console's wired connection from the Portal's wireless link and reflects Sony's troubleshooting guidance to wire the PS5 to the router, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal and minimise network interruptions.
For a buyer trying to reproduce the result, the topology is as important as the Orbi name: the source also used an ASUS router with Game-mode QoS and a separate switch. Changing those components, the wireless conditions or the internet service could change the measured latency.
What the RBK852 specification does and does not tell you
The US RBK852 is officially described as a tri-band Wi-Fi 6 two-pack with a dedicated 5 GHz wireless backhaul, a 2.5 Gbps WAN port and gigabit LAN ports. Those features describe the network hardware and connection options; NETGEAR's 6 Gbps wireless figure is an aggregate signal rating, not single-client throughput or a promised Portal latency.
The owner's approximately 30 ms result is therefore the most useful evidence for this particular arrangement, while the proposed sub-20 ms improvement remains a goal rather than a completed finding. Buyers should not treat either number as a universal performance guarantee.
US and UK buying context
US buyers can match the owner's identified RBK852 to the official US listing, but should still account for the owner's access-point topology and supporting ASUS router. UK buyers have the official Orbi 770 Series RBE772 as a newer same-brand reference, but it is not a relabel of the RBK852 and the source provides no test of its Portal latency.
The UK RBE772's two-pack configuration, regional adapter and support may differ from the source purchase. Confirm the local bundle and compatibility before buying, and use the owner's 30 ms figure only as a reference for the documented network arrangement.
