Philips NA543 SteamClean: easier tray cleaning, grease still inside

I tried SteamClean on my Philips NA543 after cooking fish. It softened stuck skin on the tray, but grease near the heater still needed hands-on cleaning.

Trying SteamClean after cooking fish

After air-frying more things than I can count, today I used the SteamClean function on my Philips NA543 for the first time. I had just air-fried mabong fish, and started SteamClean without washing the cooking pan first.

Steam cleaning still needs hands-on cleaning

Some people call it a self-cleaning function, but I don’t think that name is right at all. Its proper name is SteamClean. It simply uses steam to soften grease, and then you clean it by hand. It cannot do the entire cleaning job automatically.

Around the heating element

What about the all-important inside of the machine? A weak spot with many air fryers is the layer of grease that builds up around the heating element. I thought SteamClean was just OK here, rather than miraculous.

You can see the before-and-after comparison in photo 2. You still need to wipe the area by hand after SteamClean. Without wiping, I suspect there would be little difference. Even after wiping, I couldn’t get it completely clean.

The cooking tray

In photo 3, you can see fish skin stuck firmly to the bottom, making it difficult to clean. After SteamClean it softened and was easier to wash off. You still have to scrub it by hand in the end. Although it isn’t fully automatic, it helps a lot.

So, personally, I think SteamClean really does help with cleaning the bottom tray. Its effect around the heating element inside the appliance is still limited.

Our Take

What SteamClean actually saved

For buyers considering NA543/00 in Germany or Singapore, the owner’s NA543 experience may be relevant, but their full suffix and purchase region are unknown. In this account, the clearest benefit was loosening stuck-on food: the fish skin became easier to wash from the tray. Around the heater, some grease remained even after wiping.

Allow time to wash the removable parts and check the upper interior after the steam cycle. Philips’ cleaning guidance, which lists NA543/00, recommends washing the pan and basket with washing-up liquid and a soft sponge. It advises unplugging the appliance and letting it cool before cleaning the heater, using a soft sponge or a soft- to medium-bristle brush for residue. Abrasive tools can damage the coating.

The German product page promises cleaning without scrubbing or soaking, but this owner still needed manual work. If easier tray washing is your priority, the account is encouraging; if you want to avoid wiping around the heater, it gives less reassurance. It covers one SteamClean session after fish, and the after photos include manual cleaning as well as the steam cycle.
