Google Fitbit Air: a Hong Kong owner’s week without AI Coach

I wore the Google Fitbit Air for more than a week and found its readiness data useful, but AI Coach was unavailable on my Hong Kong account.

Purchase: Hong Kong has no official channel. Local parallel-import sellers or retailers charge around HK$1,000, while it can be bought from Amazon US for US$99 and arrived in just under two weeks.

Data: The basic data is generally fine. There is a “readiness” feature similar to Whoop’s recovery score, based on three metrics: sleep, resting heart rate and heart-rate variability. I have no idea why my heart-rate variability and resting-heart-rate metrics are both not very good. There is no Body Age metric, so it is less fun than Whoop.

Bug: The AI Coach feature cannot be used in Hong Kong. If you want to use it, you need to change the region, and it must be changed in the way shown in my example; simply updating your personal profile is not enough. However, if you live in Hong Kong long term and have used many Google services there in the past, the servers have probably already identified you as a Hong Kong user. I tried three appeals to change the region, giving different reasons, and all were rejected. If anyone has succeeded, please share your experience!

If I want AI analysis, I currently take a screenshot of the home page and send it to Copilot. I hope Google opens the service in Hong Kong soon.

Models in your region

The owner used a Google Fitbit Air in Hong Kong. US and UK official pages identify the same product family, while Google’s supported-country list for Health Coach excludes Hong Kong, so the owner’s missing AI Coach access may reflect regional service availability rather than a hardware difference.

The owner’s main trade-off is regional software access

The owner reports that AI Coach was unavailable in Hong Kong and that three attempts to change the account region were rejected. Google’s supported-country list for Health Coach includes the US and UK but not Hong Kong, so buyers there should not assume that changing a profile setting will unlock the feature.

Google Fitbit Air with Google Health Coach · US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Italy and other listed supported countries

Health Coach is an informational feature rather than medical advice, and Google warns that AI can make mistakes. The owner’s screenshot-to-Copilot workaround is a personal alternative, not evidence that Fitbit Air provides the same integrated coaching experience in Hong Kong.

Readiness data is useful but not a full Whoop replacement

After more than a week, the owner found the basic data generally acceptable and used a readiness score based on sleep, resting heart rate and heart-rate variability. This is one owner’s short-term experience, not a validation of measurement accuracy or a general sleep-performance result.

The owner specifically missed Whoop’s Body Age metric and considered the Fitbit experience less entertaining. That comparison describes the owner’s preference; it does not show that the two products calculate equivalent scores or provide identical analysis.

Buying from another market changes the support question

The owner described local parallel-import listings around HK$1,000 and an Amazon US option at US$99, with arrival in just under two weeks. Those are historical options in the post; confirm the current seller's delivery, return and warranty terms before importing.

Google lists up to seven days of battery life, 90-minute full charging and 12 g with the band in the US and UK. Basic syncing needs Google Health, a Google account, Bluetooth LE, internet and location permission.

The same Fitbit Air hardware family is sold in both countries, but service eligibility follows Google's supported-country rules. If Coach is essential to your choice, a seller's willingness to ship the band is not enough to establish access.
