Google Fitbit Air vs Oura Ring: sleep notes, with Oura Ring 5 buying context
I wore Google Fitbit Air for about a month and found it comfortable for sleep, close to Oura on key readings, and more useful when its AI explained my recent state.
I have used Fitbit Air for about a month, and my biggest impression is that it has a fairly low presence on the wrist. It is more comfortable to sleep in than an Apple Watch, and I can barely feel it. Overall, I think its comfort is similar to the Oura Ring.
The sleep data also seems quite accurate. I compared it with Oura, and on the same night the total sleep time differed by only a few minutes, while deep sleep was also very close. REM showed some differences, although consumer devices estimate sleep stages in the first place.
At the moment, I think Fitbit Air’s biggest strength is actually its AI feature. It does not simply display data such as heart rate and sleep; it combines the data to help explain my recent state. That is much more interesting than just looking at a pile of metrics. Perhaps this is also one of Google’s strengths.
If you mainly want to monitor sleep and exercise but do not like wearing an Apple Watch to bed, I think Fitbit Air is worth trying.

Models in your region
Google Fitbit Air is listed under the same product name in the US and UK. The published hardware specifications match in these markets, but Google Health Coach availability is regional: the supported list includes the US and UK, while mainland China and Hong Kong are not listed.
| Model in this review | Related regional model | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Google Fitbit Air | Google Fitbit Air (US) | The US Fitbit Air weighs 12 g with the band and is rated for up to seven days of battery life and 50 m water resistance. |
| Google Fitbit Air | Google Fitbit Air (UK) | The UK model shares those headline figures and a listed 90-minute full charge. Check Google Health Coach eligibility for your account and country separately. |
| Oura Ring (generation not stated) | Oura Ring 5 (US) | Ring 5 is a related current US product, with 2.28 mm thickness and a 6–9-day battery claim. The owner did not name the Oura generation, so their same-night sleep comparison cannot be assigned specifically to Ring 5. |

A low-profile option for sleeping
The owner’s main comfort finding is personal but useful: after about a month, Fitbit Air felt less noticeable in bed than an Apple Watch and broadly comparable with an Oura Ring. The account does not establish a universal comfort result, but it points to Fitbit Air as a candidate for people who dislike sleeping in a smartwatch.
Google lists Fitbit Air at 12 g with the band and rates it for water resistance to 50 m. The company also advises removing and completely drying a wet or sweaty band before wearing it again, so the published resistance rating does not remove the need for after-use care.
Sleep comparisons are encouraging but limited
In the owner’s same-night comparison with Oura, total sleep time differed by only a few minutes and deep sleep was very close. REM results differed more, and the owner correctly frames consumer sleep-stage readings as estimates; this was one person’s comparison, not an independent accuracy test.
The accompanying screenshots show duration, efficiency and sleep stages for this owner. Agreement between two consumer trackers does not establish clinical accuracy, and the unspecified Oura generation limits how directly to apply the comparison to a current purchase.
AI interpretation is the main experience difference
The owner found Fitbit Air’s AI more helpful than viewing isolated heart-rate and sleep metrics because it connected the data with an explanation of their recent state. This is the owner’s judgment about usefulness; the account does not measure whether the interpretations were medically or statistically accurate.
Google Health Coach supports conversational logging of meals and workouts with text, photos and files, then confirms and summarizes entries. Google says the feature provides informational guidance rather than medical advice and that AI can make mistakes, so its explanations should support personal tracking rather than replace clinical guidance.
Check regional service access before buying
For a US or UK purchase, the official listings identify the same Google Fitbit Air product family and require a Google account, the Google Health app, Bluetooth LE, internet access and location permission for syncing. The listed phone compatibility is Android 11 or later and iOS 16.4 or later.
Google’s Health Coach support list includes the US, Canada, the UK, Germany and France, among other countries, but does not list Hong Kong or mainland China. Because the owner’s account does not identify their service region or subscription arrangement, readers outside supported markets should confirm access before treating the AI experience as available.
Check the Oura generation before comparing specifications
The owner names Oura Ring without specifying its generation. Current Ring 5 specifications and membership conditions help with a purchase decision, but the owner's agreement between sleep records concerns their own ring, not an identified Ring 5 test.
