Fitbit Air reset follow-up: HRV returned and sleep records improved the next day

After restarting and resetting my Fitbit Air, HRV readings returned and sleep matched my Apple Watch the next day. I am watching whether the improvement lasts.

I have kept my original post below this update.

Yesterday I contacted Fitbit support about my band’s heart-rate variability staying at zero since the day I bought it. I had already tried wiping the sensor with alcohol and wearing it tighter, but neither helped.

Support suggested restarting it and using the full reset procedure. After doing that yesterday, it showed HRV data today, and its sleep results were on par with my Apple Watch. Those strange long periods of being awake in the middle of the night were gone. I’ll keep observing it for a while to see whether it remains normal.

Over the past three days, I tried using Fitbit to record calorie intake. It feels good—much simpler than Boohee. I can photograph my food and send it to the AI coach, which calculates the totals automatically. For greater accuracy, I still weigh the food and report the grams; it fills in and converts the information automatically.

A helpful tip: the original charging cable needs to be paired with a 15 W or lower charging adapter to charge normally. I tried a 20 W adapter, and overcurrent protection stopped it from charging.

In my original post, before the reset, I wrote: the AI coach is hopeless. It forgets what I said the day before and has serious hallucinations. I uploaded medical records, and it confidently said they had been saved, but the medical-records section was empty. When I asked again, it still said they had been uploaded. Sleep is the same: it says it changed my records, but when I check, they are unchanged—or have even been reduced.

At that stage, total sleep time differed greatly from my Apple Watch every day. Since it was still in the calibration period, I was holding off criticism and leaving the post here to update gradually.

Resetting the missing HRV data

The owner first tried cleaning the sensor and tightening the band, then reported that a restart and full reset restored HRV readings the next day. That is a single owner result rather than proof that a reset will solve zero readings for other users; Google says heart-rate accuracy depends on physiology, placement and movement.

The update reports that unexplained nighttime wake periods disappeared and sleep matched Apple Watch the next day. The conflicting daily totals are described in the older post preserved below it, not a later deterioration. The owner planned to keep observing whether the reset’s improvement lasted.

Food logging is convenient, but verify the entries

In the updated account, photo-based food logging felt simpler than Boohee over three days. The owner still weighed food and supplied grams before asking Coach to fill and convert the meal information.

The older post reported forgotten conversations, false medical-record confirmations and sleep edits that did not appear in the log. Google’s Coach instructions let users inspect confirmed entries, so open the detailed record rather than relying solely on the conversational confirmation.

Charging advice needs a narrower interpretation

The owner reported that a particular 20 W adapter did not charge the band, while the original cable worked with a 15 W-or-lower adapter. Google’s charging documentation does not say that every charger above 15 W is incompatible; it specifies compatible certified accessories and USB-C PD electrical ratings instead. Buyers should check the charger’s certification and compliance rather than treat 15 W as a universal cutoff.

Regional support and everyday requirements

Google lists up to seven days of battery life, a 90-minute full charge and support for Android 11 or later and iOS 16.4 or later for Google Fitbit Air in the US. These are manufacturer specifications, not confirmation of the owner’s actual battery life or charging time.

The UK listing gives the same headline battery, charging and compatibility specifications, but the evidence does not confirm identical accessories, account access or international warranty terms. Google also requires Bluetooth Low Energy, internet access and location permission for syncing, which may affect setup and everyday use.

Health Coach support is officially listed for countries including the US, Canada, the UK, Germany and France, but Google’s support page does not list Hong Kong or mainland China. The owner’s AI-coach experience therefore should not be treated as proof that the feature is officially available or supported in every market.
