Google Fitbit Air owner review: light, screen-free tracking with slow responses

I liked Fitbit Air's light fit and interactive logging enough to order a Timex Weekender, but slow replies and incomplete split-sleep records frustrated me.

A Timex analog wristwatch paired on a single grey woven strap with a black fitness tracker pill, displayed on a light wood surface.

A Timex Indiglo watch with a round silver case, cream dial, Arabic numerals, and a woven patterned strap worn on a wrist against a wooden tabletop.

This week I bought the Fitbit Air, and I feel it beats the Apple Watch in every respect.

The AI Coach has a three-month trial, and I personally think it is very useful.

I prefer interactively entering my own meals and exercise and receiving timely feedback

rather than merely recording everything and then having nothing else happen.

It is very light and feels great on my wrist. I still instinctively raise my wrist to check the time, only to realize that it has no screen.

Yesterday I saw that the Fitbit Air works with NATO watch straps.

I immediately ordered a Timex Weekender for less than $50 on sale.

I saw a news report saying that Google had released the Air’s design drawings, so I feel all kinds of watch straps will become available soon. I am looking forward to that.

The biggest problems so far are as follows

It responds very slowly: one question basically takes 20 seconds to answer, and I cannot exit or turn off the screen while it is thinking.

If I pause during a run, the heart-rate reading also pauses, so it cannot show my lower heart rate afterward.

If I wake up for too long during the night, it can record only the first sleep segment, so I have to correct it manually.

Google lists the Fitbit Air under the same product name in the US and UK, with up to seven days of battery life, a listed 12 g weight with band, and support for Android 11 or later and iOS 16.4 or later. The owner’s exact regional variant is not identified, so accessory availability, account access and warranty terms still need local confirmation.

A screen-free tracker changes the interaction

The owner chose the Fitbit Air for interactive logging rather than passive record-keeping, saying the AI Coach provides feedback after entering meals and exercise. Google describes Health Coach as supporting meal and workout logs through text, photos and files, with confirmation and summaries after logging; it also warns that the feature provides informational guidance and can make mistakes.

The owner also found the lack of a display noticeable in daily use: raising a wrist to check the time became an automatic gesture before the missing screen interrupted it. That makes the Air a different choice from a conventional smartwatch, but the owner’s comparison with the Apple Watch is a personal judgment rather than a measured feature comparison.

Fit, battery and local compatibility

Google lists Fitbit Air at 5.2 g without its band and 12 g with it. This owner liked its light feel but still instinctively raised their wrist to check the time, giving a practical reason to keep a separate watch.

The US and UK specifications rate Fitbit Air for up to seven days per charge and 90 minutes for a full charge. Those figures describe the advertised hardware; this early account concentrates on app interactions and sleep recording.

After seeing a Fitbit Air and NATO-strap combination, the owner ordered a Timex Weekender and looked forward to more bands. Before copying the setup, check the exact strap width, adapter and fit shown by the seller.

The reported limitations matter during active use

Waiting about 20 seconds for a Coach reply was frustrating for this owner, particularly because they had to keep the phone app active while it was thinking. Consider that interaction cost if conversational logging is the main reason you want the band.

The owner also found that pausing a run paused the displayed heart-rate value, preventing them from following the decline afterward. If you use heart rate during recovery intervals, test that specific app workflow rather than assuming a screen-free tracker will replace the watch display.

Long nighttime wakefulness left only the first sleep segment recorded for this owner. Manually correcting the record was an extra task, especially relevant if your normal sleep is split into separate periods.

Check Health Coach availability before relying on it

The owner reports a three-month AI Coach trial and values its meal and exercise feedback. Google’s current Health Coach support list includes the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France and Italy, among other countries, but does not include Hong Kong or mainland China. Trial eligibility, account access and regional terms therefore need checking in the buyer’s market.
