Whisker Litter-Robot 4: two weeks helping my timid cat adjust

My timid 10-year-old cat used the Litter-Robot 4 more during the second week after I kept her familiar litter and a backup box available.

I have been using the Litter-Robot 4 for half a month. My cat is gradually accepting it and using it more often. I have one 15 lb (about 6.8 kg), 10-year-old cat, and, judging by eye, the globe seems spacious enough for her; she has no problem getting in and out.

My cat is timid and normally needs time to get used to electronic products. To help her adjust, I did some research and tried a few approaches. Here is what I learned from the experience:

  1. Put it where the old litter box stood and use the same litter; that really helped. We had always used Arm & Hammer Slide, shown in Figure 3. My cat does not mind its smell and actually seems to like it. It appears to work well with the LR4, and so far I have not had problems with litter sticking to the bottom. I set it to clean seven minutes after use.
  2. Keep a backup litter box during the adjustment period. The official website recommends leaving the old litter box uncleaned so the cat gradually starts using the LR4. I put out her discarded old litter box, the green one on the right in Figure 2, which she had already disliked since last year. During the first week she still used the old box a few times. In the second week, after getting used to the LR4, she basically stopped using it.
  3. Before buying, I saw other users say that if a cat is frightened by the machine, you should turn it off at first and clean it using manual mode. After trying that for two days, I found that my cat actually used it less. I felt that, to help her become desensitized to the new appliance, it was better to let the machine run more often. She watched it to figure out what it was doing, and seeing it repeatedly seemed to reassure her. After that, I ran the machine empty once a day, and she actually used it more.

The Whisker app is quite useful. You can ignore the long list of button combinations in the manual and operate it through the app instead. As shown in Figure 4, when my cat uses the litter box, her weight is recorded. If she just leans in to look without entering and using it, no weight is recorded, but there is still a clean cycle.

The litter mat is an old one I bought at Target. It looks a bit like the official mat, but this one has an opening at one end so I can pour the collected litter out. The official mat seems to open from the side, which would be more convenient, but it is also more expensive. The black barrier was originally bought as a fireplace cover, and it works quite well. The original post also includes a referral link.

What the Owner’s Two Weeks Suggest

The owner’s experience covers one 10-year-old, approximately 15 lb cat over two weeks, not a long-term reliability test. Her cat used the LR4 more during the second week, while still using the old box a few times during the first week. That makes the account most useful as a transition example for a cautious cat, rather than proof that every cat will adapt on the same schedule.

The owner changed more than one variable: she placed the LR4 in the old box’s location, used the same Arm & Hammer Slide litter, retained a backup box and set cleaning for seven minutes after use. Her report is that the litter has not stuck to the bottom so far, but this is her experience with one cat, litter and observation period.

The owner’s approach to her cat’s fear of the new appliance went against advice she had read from other users. After two days of keeping the machine off and cleaning manually, she felt her cat used it less; running one empty cycle each day while the cat watched appeared to increase use. This is an individual desensitization approach, not a universal instruction.

App Activity and What It Can Tell You

The owner found the Whisker app easier than relying on the manual’s button combinations. In her account, a real visit produced a recorded weight, while looking into the opening without entering produced no weight but still triggered a clean cycle. This is the owner’s interpretation of their own cat’s activity; the official US listing describes app visit and weight monitoring.

Regional Buying Details

The official US product is an enclosed rotating globe with a sealed waste drawer and requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Automatic mode is specified for cats weighing at least 3 lb; the owner’s approximately 15 lb cat is above that threshold. These are product specifications, separate from the owner’s limited two-week adaptation result.

The UK listing gives a 15 V DC device power supply, a 40 by 40 cm entrance, a 10.9 kg empty weight and a 56 by 68.6 cm footprint. It also lists a two-year standard warranty. UK buyers should confirm the local adapter and purchase support rather than relying on US bundle prices or retailer return terms.

Cleaning and Setup Considerations

The owner used a Target litter mat with an opening at one end and repurposed a black fireplace cover as a barrier around the setup. She considers the official mat’s side-opening design more convenient but more expensive. These accessories describe her arrangement and are not evidence that either accessory is required for the LR4.

For deeper maintenance, the official instructions say not to immerse, spray or soak the electronic base or control panel. Wipe the base with a damp cloth, spray onto the cloth away from the electronics, and ensure the globe is aligned and the bonnet is securely latched during reassembly.
