I Cleared Black Flakes from My Lodge Cast-Iron Skillet
Reviewed: Lodge Seasoned cast-iron skillet, size and SKU unspecifiedRegional reference: Lodge Classic Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet family (United States)
I heated my Lodge cast-iron skillet dry on a gas burner and scraped away most of the black residue, but a little remained on the sides.
Following advice from other Xiaohongshu users worked when I tried it myself.
The first photo shows the condition of the pan’s cooking surface before I treated it. Over time, black, greasy residue had built up there. At first, I thought the seasoning had come off while I was frying meat. More recently, black flakes also started falling off when I used the pan to stir-fry vegetables.
I followed the method I saw online: I heated the empty pan on a gas burner for a little over ten minutes. It started smoking, then eventually stopped. As it heated, I scraped at the stuck-on black residue, and it gradually came off. That left it looking like the second photo. Next, I still needed to wash it and season it again.
To do a more thorough job, I could have rotated the pan and heated its sides, which might have removed the black residue there completely. A little is still left on mine, but I’m already very satisfied with the result.

Compare the cleanup with Lodge’s care guidance
The photographed result is removal of most visible buildup from the cooking surface, with a few patches left toward the sides. The owner described washing and reseasoning as the next step, so the post stops before showing a renewed cooking surface in use.
For black flakes on seasoned cast iron, Lodge’s official guidance is to wash and scrub, dry completely, apply a thin layer of oil, and bake for one hour at 450–500°F. This gives owners a documented care route; the source’s dry gas heating and scraping are the author’s separate account, rather than Lodge’s specified method.
