PETKIT PURA X: Four Years With Four Cats and a Replacement

I used a PETKIT PURA X with four cats for four years before its controls stopped responding, then bought another because its footprint still suited my space.

My first-generation PETKIT cat litter box finally stopped working after four years. Pressing any of the cleaning or reset controls did nothing, and I did not want to keep troubleshooting it, so I decided to buy a new one.

It had worked without too many problems, so I did not consider another brand. I looked at the second generation, but the space I had reserved could not fit a wider litter box. I had also seen people say that the second generation had various problems. Since the first generation had worked reasonably well for me, I bought another one. It was 1,000 yuan cheaper than when I originally bought mine, which felt like a great deal.

What four years with the first generation felt like

I have four cats, and it worked for up to three days at a time without major problems.

I did not choose the dedicated cat litter because it was expensive. After trying many types, I settled on N1 small-particle tofu litter, which was still more economical. I strongly recommend against bentonite litter, or you will find dirt all over your home. The brand I used may also have been the problem.

Problems over the four years: the noise gradually became louder, although that felt normal to me. One of the cats damaged the deodorizing box while playing with it, so it stopped working a long time ago. I lost two of the four feet while moving, so I had to prop the machine up myself to keep it stable.

At first I bought PETKIT’s dedicated litter-trapping mat, but one of the cats chewed it, vomited, and then chewed it again. In the end, I bought a mat with a base from Taobao, and it worked quite well.

I will share another usage update after I have used the new unit for a while.

The owner’s packaging identifies the product as PETKIT PURA X, but the owner does not give a full model number. PETKIT’s US manual identifies PURA X as model P9901, while PETKIT’s German support page lists PURA X and links the same manual; this establishes a regional reference, not current stock or identical accessories for the owner’s two units.

Allow for the actual footprint

The owner chose another first-generation unit because the reserved space could not accommodate the wider second-generation box. For the US P9901 reference, PETKIT lists dimensions of 522 × 504 × 642 mm, so measure the available width, depth and height against the exact local listing before buying.

The owner’s four-cat household used the machine for up to three days without major problems, but that is a single household experience rather than a capacity test. Buyers should treat it as useful long-term context, not a guarantee for a different cat count, litter type or cleaning routine.

Litter choice affects the experience

The owner settled on N1 small-particle tofu litter after trying several types and strongly discouraged bentonite litter because it spread dirt throughout the home. The owner also left open the possibility that the particular bentonite brand was responsible, so this is an individual result rather than a universal compatibility finding.

The owner did not use the dedicated litter because of its cost and later replaced the dedicated tracking mat after a cat repeatedly chewed it. A local mat with a base worked well for this owner, but accessory fit and availability should be checked for the regional listing.

Plan for maintenance and long-term wear

After four years, the owner reported increasingly loud operation, a deodorizing box damaged by a cat, and two missing feet after moving. The owner had to add supports to keep the unit stable, so buyers should consider how the machine will be moved and how replacement feet and deodorizing accessories are obtained locally.

PETKIT’s P9901 manual says to wash the cylinder and sifter, wipe the main unit and sensors, and reassemble everything dry; it also says not to rinse or immerse the base, to place the unit on a level surface, and to leave repairs to professionals. The manual does not establish current accessory compatibility.

The replacement is not yet a follow-up test

The owner had only bought the replacement and planned to report back after using it for a while. The four-year observations therefore apply to the previous unit; they do not confirm the new unit’s noise, reliability, cleaning performance or accessory behavior.
