My Rinnai RXP199iN: steady hot water, but more noise than expected

I replaced my 14-year-old tank water heater with a Rinnai RXP199iN. Hot water is steady, but the noise is more noticeable than I expected.

My household’s storage-tank water heater finally retired after 14 years—unfortunately, it flooded the basement. After a lot of research and debate, I replaced it with this one.

Downsides: It is noisier than I expected, though the sound is acceptable in the laundry room. It was expensive. The Wi-Fi control feature requires buying a separate module.

Upsides: Water pressure and temperature are steady, and it uses less gas. There is a continuous supply of hot water.

At the time, the water heater cost about $1,900 after tax at market price. Changing the water pipes and gas line (from 1/2 inch to 2/4 inch), plus various fittings, valves and pipes, came to about $400. That does not include tools! I installed it myself. To filter the water and help the heater last longer, I also installed a whole-house water filtration system; materials cost $700.

Later, I plan to install a Navien NCB-250/150H in another house and compare the two. I’m still trying things and comparing—only experience gives you a say!

Noise and hot-water experience

After replacing a 14-year-old storage-tank heater that had flooded the basement, the owner found the RXP199iN noisier than expected. The sound was acceptable in the laundry room; this is a personal observation, not a measured noise level.

The owner reports steady water pressure and temperature and a continuous supply of hot water. They also say the heater uses less gas, but give no metered consumption or comparison conditions, so the account does not establish the size of any fuel savings.

Accessories, installation and costs

The RWM200 is an optional, separately sold Wi-Fi module for phone-based control and recirculation scheduling. The owner’s note that Wi-Fi needs an extra module matches that accessory arrangement, but the account does not say they bought or used it.

The owner recorded about $1,900 after tax for the heater, about $400 for pipe changes and other materials excluding tools, and a separate $700 for whole-house filtration materials. These are historical expenses from the June 2025 account, not a current installed quote. The caption says the gas line changed from 1/2 inch to 2/4 inch; in a same-day reply, the owner gives 3/4 inch instead.

The RXP199iN has an internal recirculation pump. Its factory Smart-Circ setting learns hot-water use and operates recirculation around that pattern on subsequent days. A fixed schedule instead uses a compatible MC-195T-US controller or RWM200 Wi-Fi module and disables Smart-Circ. These are manufacturer capabilities, not functions the owner reports testing. Rinnai requires trained, qualified installation and service.

The Navien comparison is still future

The owner plans to install a Navien NCB-250/150H in another home, but has not reported a completed comparison. Their current noise and hot-water observations are specific to the Rinnai RXP199iN and cannot establish how the Navien performs.
