Steam Deck OLED 1TB: why I turned off FSR in Diablo IV

I upgraded from an LCD Steam Deck to the 1TB OLED for Diablo IV, then found that turning off AMD FSR improved the character clarity I had been trying to fix.

The story began because Diablo IV became increasingly uncomfortable to play on my LCD model. The character looked especially blurry, and I felt it had not been this bad when I first bought the device. After getting nowhere with various suggestions from Doubao and Xiaohongshu, I sold the old model through Xianyu and bought the OLED 1TB single-system version. Here are a few impressions.

  1. I recommend that regular Steam users stick with a single-system setup. In my experience, dual-boot optimization on the Steam Deck is not very good. If you enjoy exploring, SteamOS itself is quite good. During the three years I owned my LCD model, I only used Windows during the first month or two, and every SteamOS update in the dual-boot setup disconnected the external drive, which was very troublesome to restore.
  2. Buying new rather than old does make some sense, especially with electronics. Although the OLED cost more, it felt better than the LCD in weight, image quality and battery life.
  3. The little yellow duck is essential. It really makes a huge difference. At 26 or 29 yuan, it is not going to hurt your wallet and cannot go too far wrong.
  4. After installing Diablo IV on the OLED, the character was still blurry. I later found that I may have selected AMD FSR. In my testing, neither option should be selected; simply turn it off. Looking back, I might not have changed devices if I had used the same setting on the LCD.
  5. A complaint about Doubao: it was truly awful. I do not know whether ByteDance is laying the groundwork for charging in the future, but Doubao made things up constantly and copied settings from a 2022 version of the game. It even invented an FSR 3.0. When I questioned it, it blamed the compatibility layer. The whole experience was unbelievable. I suggest using it as a writing aid if you like, but do not rely on it to look up guides or technical explanations. It can really lead you astray.

Models in your region

The owner used a Steam Deck OLED 1TB single-system model. Valve’s US and UK 1TB version is the closest official regional reference, with an etched-glass display package; the owner’s China-market purchase does not establish local warranty coverage.

Check the game setting before replacing the hardware

The owner’s most important Diablo IV discovery was not an OLED-specific performance result: turning off AMD FSR improved the character clarity they had been trying to fix. Because this was one owner’s setting change in one game, it does not prove that FSR behaves the same way on every Deck or configuration, but it is a useful troubleshooting step before buying another handheld.

The Steam Deck OLED uses a 1280×800 display with a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz, but Valve’s specification does not identify the owner’s Diablo IV settings or measure image quality in that game. Buyers should therefore treat the OLED’s display specification and the owner’s FSR result as separate pieces of information.

What the OLED changes compared with the LCD

The owner reported that the OLED felt better than their LCD in weight, image quality and battery life after switching. Valve lists the OLED at approximately 640 g with a 50 Wh battery and advertises 30–50% more battery life than the LCD, while the owner did not record a measured runtime or weight comparison.

For regional buyers, Valve distinguishes the 1TB OLED package from the 512GB version by its premium etched glass, intended to reduce glare. That package difference is confirmed for the US and UK product listing, but the owner’s account does not say whether glare reduction affected their Diablo IV sessions.

Single-system advice and game compatibility

The owner recommends a single-system Steam Deck for regular Steam users because their dual-boot setup repeatedly lost access to an external drive after SteamOS updates. This is their three-year LCD experience, not a confirmed failure rate for all dual-boot installations. Valve lists SteamOS 3 as the OLED software platform, so buyers considering Windows should verify their intended setup separately.

Valve’s compatibility labels distinguish Verified, Playable, Unsupported and Unknown; Playable games may require manual adjustments, while Unknown means the title has not yet been checked. A compatibility badge count is not a count of every game that can run, so Diablo IV buyers should check the current listing and be prepared for game-specific settings work.

Valve lists direct availability in the United States, Canada, the European Union and United Kingdom, with several Asian markets served through Komodo. The owner’s China-market purchase shows what they used, but it does not confirm warranty or service coverage for buyers in China or any other market.
