WMF Perfect Pro: handle cracks after six years

Reviewed: WMF Perfect ProRegional reference: WMF Perfect Pro (Mainland China / original Germany purchase); WMF Perfect Premium (Germany)

I used my WMF Perfect Pro for six years and found matching cracks in two handles after regular cooking, plus a difficult rebuild and later leakage.

The WMF Perfect Pro pressure cooker was carried back from Germany six years ago. After using it for a while, I worked out some operating tips: 1. Once pressure has built, always turn the heat down low. If the heat is not low enough, the pressure inside will keep rising, leaving the cooker heating and releasing steam at the same time, with noticeable noise. When the heat is low enough, it can maintain steady pressure; 2. When used on a gas stove, the radiant heat is relatively strong, which makes the handle and lid, including the sealing ring, too hot. This accelerates seal aging and shortens its life, so it needs frequent replacement. I used it about three or four times a week, mainly for stewed meat. My first sealing ring lasted less than six months before it began leaking. Each sealing ring cost about 80 yuan.

In short, the cooker that works best with the WMF Perfect is an induction hob, which can effectively extend the sealing ring's life.

I spent a year in the UK in 2018 and carried the pressure cooker with me, then carried it back to China again. That shows how much I loved and depended on it. While in the UK, I accidentally dropped the handle on the floor, breaking the stainless-steel ring at the end (left in Figure 1). I immediately bought a replacement on Amazon for nearly 500 yuan, and the cooker returned to normal use. When I came back to China, I brought the old handle with me as well, thinking that some of its other parts might come in handy later.

The new handle served for more than three years and was never dropped or knocked. Today, my partner suddenly noticed a crack in the plastic at the front (right in Figure 2). I felt reluctant to buy another one, so I took out the old handle and tried to dismantle and rebuild it myself. I then found that the old handle also had a crack in exactly the same place (left in Figure 2). After searching online, I found someone on Zhihu reporting the same problem, with the crack in exactly the same position.

My conclusion is that this Perfect Pro has a design defect: even after I understood how it behaved and used it carefully, I still could not avoid cracks forming in the plastic.

I have used it for six years in total. The cooker cost more than 1,000 yuan, and I bought three additional sealing rings for about 250 yuan. The handle lasted about three years and cost 500 yuan each. When I calculate the annual cost of use, I cannot bring myself to love it, even though it works very well.

In the end, I rebuilt both handles because the crack in the old one was less severe. It took me four hours to finally sort everything out. I now have some confidence that I could accept handle-repair jobs—just kidding.

If you have a Perfect Pro at home, check whether yours has cracks. Considering the frequency of use, it may happen sooner or later. If the crack is already deep, be especially careful. If you have an unused or broken WMF Perfect Pro handle, you can sell it to me; I may buy a few to keep as convenient replacement parts.

I also need to look for a new pressure cooker. Please recommend one that works well.

The reviewed product is the owner's WMF Perfect Pro, bought in Germany, but its capacity and exact SKU are not supplied. Germany's current WMF Perfect Premium is a related stovetop pressure cooker rather than a confirmed identical model; its parts interchangeability and failure-rate equivalence with the Pro are unknown, so the owner's handle experience should not be transferred to it as a product-wide finding.

What the six-year account shows

The owner used the WMF Perfect Pro roughly three or four times a week, mainly for stewed meat, over six years. One sealing ring lasted less than six months before leaking, and the owner later bought three more; this documents one household’s replacement pattern, not a verified service life for every cooker or seal.

The owner also reported cracks in the same front-plastic location on two handles: one replacement handle after more than three years of careful use, and the previously dropped handle as well. That repeated location prompted the owner’s design-defect conclusion, but no independent failure-rate or engineering evidence is supplied.

Hob choice and maintenance

The owner found that low heat after pressure builds keeps the cooker at steady pressure and avoids continued heating with noisy steam release. They also attributed faster sealing-ring aging to radiant heat from a gas stove and recommended induction instead; this is the owner’s explanation and recommendation, not a verified WMF durability test.

For buyers considering a similar cooker, the practical issue is recurring seal replacement alongside the handle condition. The owner’s account does not establish whether the same pattern occurs across different Perfect Pro capacities, production years or stove setups because the exact SKU and comparison sample are missing.

Repair outcome and buying caution

The owner spent about four hours rebuilding both handles and initially described having some confidence in the result, but a later reply reported that water still leaked after reassembly, although steam leakage was not severe. The repair therefore cannot be presented as a successful lasting fix, and no repair procedure or manufacturer approval is established.

The owner advised checking a Perfect Pro handle for cracks and taking particular care if a crack is deep. That advice is tied to the owner’s two-handle experience; the supplied material does not determine whether a cracked handle remains safe to use or provide a qualified inspection or replacement standard.

How the current German model compares

WMF’s current German Perfect Premium is listed with a 6.5-liter capacity, an all-in-one control knob in the removable lid handle and two pressure levels of 25 and 70 kPa. It supports gas, electric, ceramic, halogen and induction hobs, while the lid handle and sealing ring are excluded from dishwasher cleaning.

Those listed features give Perfect Premium buyers useful configuration context, but they do not prove that the owner’s Perfect Pro has the same capacity, control assembly or compatible replacement parts. The official listing also provides no basis for transferring the Pro owner’s crack history or claiming that the Premium avoids it.
