PETKIT MAX2: 278-day cleaning notes for PURA MAX 2 and PUROBOT MAX 3 buyers

I used my PETKIT MAX2 for 278 days before its first deep clean; daily wiping kept the interior surprisingly clean, while I tracked waste-bin routines.

The model is PETKIT MAX2.

I know that waiting this long to wash it for the first time means I was not clean enough—sorry, cat. I’ll get down on my knees first. But I check the litter-box environment every day and wipe the inside walls with wet wipes to keep them clean; otherwise, it will smell. I live in a 50-square-metre studio apartment, so the cat toilet is in the living room.

But after taking it apart and washing it this time, I found that apart from some fallen litter, the inside was not dirty at all. It was easy to wash. At this rate, washing it once every six months seems completely fine. I’m still in Guangdong, China. After reading many posts on Xiaohongshu, I put camphor balls in the waste drawer: I cut open a small bag and placed it where the deodorizer normally goes, and there have been no insects or anything like that. In summer, I empty the waste drawer every two or three days; in winter, I empty it every five days.

My cat is very well suited to an automatic litter box because she does not like burying her waste. She often goes in lightly and comes out lightly, carrying very little litter with her. Good girl.

Using it together with a robot vacuum scheduled to clean the area outside the cat toilet is truly a lazy person’s blessing. It would be even better if the litter box and robot vacuum could work together: once the litter box detects that the cat has finished, the robot vacuum could start working immediately. I hope the major brands will cooperate.

This post is not a recommendation; I am only describing my experience.

The owner identifies the product as the Chinese-market PETKIT MAX2. The official English PURA MAX 2 manual is a related international reference, but it does not establish that the two versions have identical SKUs or components.

What the 278-day account does—and does not—show

The owner reports a first full disassembly and wash after 278 days, with only fallen litter and little visible dirt inside. That is a single owner’s result under a specific routine, not a general six-month maintenance recommendation: the owner also wiped the inner walls daily and checked the litter-box area every day.

The owner’s 50-square-metre studio apartment puts odour control in a living-room setting, where smells may be more noticeable. Their waste-drawer routine was emptying it every two or three days in summer and every five days in winter; these intervals describe this household rather than a universal schedule.

Cleaning and disassembly guidance

For the international PURA MAX 2 reference, the official manual says to turn the power off before disassembly. It instructs users to wash the cylinder and litter sifter, clean the pad when dirty, wipe the electronic base rather than rinsing it, and dry the parts before reassembly. Those instructions are more specific than the owner’s reported interval and should be checked against the local version’s manual.

The owner’s report supports a practical combination of frequent surface wiping and occasional deeper cleaning, but it does not verify hidden areas, long-term odour performance, or whether every component of the Chinese MAX2 matches the international manual.

Treat the camphor-ball practice as a safety concern

The owner says they placed a small bag of camphor balls in the waste drawer after seeing the practice on Xiaohongshu. The ingredient of that product is not established, so this account should not be read as an endorsement or as proof that it prevents insects.

Household mothballs · Pet safety; not a product equivalence

ASPCA Animal Poison Control lists household mothballs among household toxins and warns that naphthalene mothballs can impair oxygen carrying in pets’ blood. Keep such products inaccessible to pets; before using any deodorizing product near a litter box, verify its ingredients and pet-safety guidance rather than copying this practice.

Cat behaviour and floor cleanup

The owner’s cat reportedly does not bury her waste, enters and exits lightly, and carries very little litter out. That may explain why this household sees little tracking, but it is a behaviour-specific observation rather than a performance result that every cat should expect.

The owner also schedules a robot vacuum to clean the area outside the litter box. They wanted the litter box to trigger the vacuum automatically after use, but the post describes that as a wish, not a confirmed feature or integration.

Regional buying checks

Buyers outside the owner’s market should confirm the exact local model, replacement parts, cleaning instructions and power requirements before treating this experience as directly applicable. The supplied international manual confirms cleaning and app-related information for PURA MAX 2, but not identical hardware for the Chinese MAX2.

The current US PETKIT PUROBOT MAX 3 is a newer product with a 7-litre waste bin, an airtight waste-bin cover, N50 and N60 odour-control modules, and 360-degree ShieldBase leak protection. Those listed features distinguish it from the owner’s MAX2, and the owner’s cleaning or drawer-odour report should not be transferred to MAX3.
