PETKIT MAX (T4): four years with four cats, with PuraMax 2 buying context

I've used PETKIT MAX litter boxes for four years with four cats. Less scooping is a relief, though sensor glitches, stuck clumps and litter leaks still happen.

Let me explain my situation first: I travel frequently for work, I have four cats at home, and I have two PETKIT automatic litter boxes.

The biggest advantage is that I do not have to scoop litter every day; I empty the waste about once every four to five days. If I am away and arrange for someone to come over, visiting once every four days is enough.

Multi-cat recognition

If you have several cats at home, remember to enter each cat's weight in advance. It can record how often each cat uses the litter box. You can see at a glance on your phone which cat is using it unusually rarely or often, which is quite useful for monitoring the cats' health.

Sensing during operation

When a cat approaches, it automatically stops rotating, which is a safe design. However, it occasionally acts up—the display says, “Sensor triggered; double-click OK to recover,” but double-clicking OK does not respond at all. I usually ignore it, and it gets better by itself after a while; if I am in a hurry, unplugging it and plugging it back in also restores it.

Problems during cleaning

• If a cat produces an exceptionally large urine clump, it may not roll into the collection bin and will remain in the drum. Normal-sized urine clumps and feces are completely fine.

• When there is too little litter, urine may land at the edge of the protective mat and seep onto the base. Sometimes litter also mysteriously leaks into the base, causing it to stick to the outside of the drum when it rotates. The solution is to add litter promptly and clean it regularly.

• The protective mat is not very easy to wash. Scrubbing improves it, but never makes it completely clean; fortunately, it dries quickly.

• I remove and reinstall the litter screen every time, and nine times out of ten I install it backwards… The odor-control bracket also always gets stuck unevenly, leaving a gap. Because I use mineral litter, dust easily sticks to the odor purifier, and the outer casing becomes sticky too.

• The deodorizing liquid really is fragrant, but honestly, if you use a better mineral litter, there is not much odor to begin with. The deodorizing liquid is not essential.

Choosing cat litter

At the moment, I most like the mineral litter I buy at Sam’s Club and call ‘Platinum Diamond’. One large bag contains four paper bags, which are especially easy to open, and one bag is exactly enough to fill one litter box. I previously bought mineral litter in a hard box, but it was difficult to open, spilled easily, and was a hassle to add. I also tried mineral litter from other brands; it smelled terrible, so I immediately switched back.

Cleaning frequency

I wash it once every one to two months. Using a long-handled brush makes the job easier.

Money-saving tips

You do not need to buy PETKIT's special garbage bags; they are too expensive. I use the thick bags left over from ordinary grocery shopping. As long as they are large enough, they fit over the bin.

I would not buy the magnetic door-curtain accessory; it gets dirty particularly easily and attracts fur.

The small deodorizing blocks are not very useful either. Choosing the right litter helps more than these.

Summary

Although it has these various minor problems, they are basically acceptable to me. I have used it for four years, and it still operates without problems. The cats' litter area stays clean, and most importantly, it frees my hands, so short business trips are not much of a worry. Overall, I think an automatic litter box is quite necessary.

The owner identifies the photographed unit as the older PETKIT MAX, part of the T4 family, rather than giving a complete retail model number. The official international manual identifies the original family as PURA MAX P9902 (T4), measuring 620 × 538 × 552 mm and weighing about 9.5 kg including its adapter. US and UK listings cover the newer PuraMax 2, so the owner's four-year experience should not be treated as proof of identical performance or repair compatibility.

What the four-year account is useful for

The owner's experience is unusually relevant to multi-cat routines: the household has four cats and two units, and the owner reports emptying the waste about every four to five days. That is a personal result under this household's usage, not a guaranteed interval for every home. The app's usage and waste/litter status are also documented for the original T4 family, while the owner specifically reports entering each cat's weight and reviewing individual toilet frequency.

For buyers who travel, the practical benefit is reduced daily scooping rather than maintenance-free operation. The owner says a helper visiting every four days was sufficient during trips, but the account also requires timely litter top-ups and periodic cleaning, so an unattended setup still needs a care plan.

Safety sensing and recurring glitches

The owner confirms that the drum stops when a cat approaches, but also reports occasional sensor-trigger messages that did not clear after double-clicking OK. Their workarounds were waiting or unplugging and reconnecting the unit; these are the owner's remedies, not an official repair procedure.

The official manual says to turn off and unplug the original T4 before removing the cylinder, and to wash only the cylinder and sifter while wiping the electronic base without rinsing or immersing it. Buyers comparing an older MAX should therefore separate the owner's long-term fault history from the manufacturer's cleaning limits.

Clump size, leakage and cleaning workload

The most concrete limitation in the account is clump handling: an exceptionally large urine clump may fail to roll into the waste bin, while ordinary clumps and feces worked normally for this owner. Low litter can also allow urine to reach the edge of the mat, and stray litter may enter the base and stick to the outside of the rotating drum.

The owner cleans the unit every one to two months and recommends a long-handled brush. They found the mat difficult to clean completely, although it dried quickly, and described repeated difficulty reinstalling the litter screen correctly and fitting the odor-control bracket flush. These observations make access and reassembly important points to inspect before buying an older unit.

Litter and consumables

In this household, mineral litter choice mattered more for odor than the deodorizing liquid or small deodorizing blocks. The owner preferred Sam's Club's Platinum Diamond mineral litter because four paper-wrapped portions in one large bag were easy to open and one portion filled one litter box; other brands were rejected for odor.

The owner also avoided PETKIT's dedicated waste bags, using sufficiently large, thick grocery bags instead, and advised against the magnetic door curtain because it attracts dirt and fur. These are personal cost and convenience preferences; buyers should confirm fit and local accessory availability for their own regional model.

Original MAX versus regional PuraMax 2 options

The US PuraMax 2 listing describes a 7 L waste bin, low entrance, app usage tracking and an upgraded seamless ShieldBase cylinder. The UK listing likewise identifies PuraMax 2 with PURA Air and the upgraded seamless ShieldBase cylinder. Because both are successors, the owner's original-MAX leakage, sensor and reassembly issues are useful questions to investigate, not confirmed faults on these newer models.

For the original T4 family, the official manual lists dimensions of 620 × 538 × 552 mm, about 9.5 kg including the adapter, 12 V power and 24 W consumption. The manual also says the cylinder and sifter must be fully dry before reassembly, while the electronic base must only be wiped, which directly affects placement and cleaning routines.
