PETKIT PURA MAX: two-week bin-alert and false-visit notes for PuraMax 2 buyers
I used PETKIT PURA MAX with one cat for two weeks: it reduced scooping, but the bin filled in three days and false visits triggered extra cleaning.
I bought it for $399 at the early-bird price and used it for half a month. I cannot say I am especially satisfied, but I do not regret buying it either. I am listing its pros and cons here for reference.
Pros
+ It completely frees my hands during normal use. I only need to replace the waste bag and clean it regularly.
+ During the entire automatic cleaning process, the entrance remains completely exposed, so there is no risk of the cat getting caught.
+ The automatic cleaning process is fairly quiet.
+ The waste collection bin has a sealing lid, so I cannot smell any odor during normal use.
For a lazy person, the first two points are already enough to justify buying an automatic litter box. I also had another reason for buying one: when I travel, I can ask a friend to come over and put out canned food, but I do not feel comfortable asking them to scoop the litter. However, PURA MAX did not completely satisfy that need. That leads to its biggest drawback:
Three days! The waste collection bin was full after three days! I do not understand it. The official website clearly advertises “up to 15 days of unattended use,” and I only have one cat, so why was it full after three days?
There are also some other drawbacks that I can tolerate
- Litter and feces rub onto the inner wall, and there is also sticking at the bottom. Litter gets caught in the machine’s gaps, although this is probably a problem all automatic litter boxes have.
- The odor neutralizer, including its associated lighting, is fairly pointless. First, neither my cat nor I like the smell of the deodorizer. The phone controls also have a delay, so I no longer use it at all, which saves me the cost of buying deodorizer and batteries.
- The litter-trapping mat cannot be placed underneath the machine because, I was told, it would affect weighing. It is held to the floor only by double-sided tape at two corners, but it needs to be lifted regularly to empty the litter inside it, so that feels inconvenient. I went back to my original litter mat, which sits tightly against the floor and can simply be vacuumed.
- The false-positive rate for detecting whether my cat has gone inside to use the toilet is too high. Sometimes my cat only puts half its body inside to look around, and the machine records that as a visit even though it measures only 3 kg. I think it would be better if users could set their own threshold; that should be something software could solve. My cat also sometimes stands on top of the machine, and that counts as a use too. This is probably because the weight sensors are installed at the bottom of the entire machine rather than under the inner chamber. I may buy a stand later so the cat cannot jump onto it.
- The problem above leads to another issue: if automatic cleaning is set to run after every toilet visit, it cleans more often than the cat actually uses the toilet. For example, if I set it to clean 30 minutes after use, my cat might first put its head inside and be incorrectly identified as using it. If the cat then actually goes 20 minutes later, the machine may start cleaning only 10 minutes afterward, which could make litter more likely to stick to the bottom or inner wall.
- There is no one-button empty-litter function. When I want to wash the whole unit, I have to remove the inner chamber together with the litter inside and then pour the litter out. The chamber itself is not heavy, but the litter really is. In this respect, it is much less convenient than the previous generation.

The owner calls the product PURA MAX but does not provide a full model number. The international English manual identifies PURA MAX P9902, while the current UK PuraMax 2 with PURA Air is a newer regional counterpart rather than proof of an identical China-market configuration.

What the owner’s capacity result means
The owner’s one-cat experience produced a full waste bin after three days, despite the product’s advertised “up to 15 days” unattended-use claim. The current UK page qualifies that maximum as a single-cat laboratory result and says storage can vary with heat and humidity, so buyers should treat the claim as a test condition rather than a guaranteed interval.
The owner’s experience is useful for planning around a trip, but it covers one cat, roughly half a month of ownership and the reported cleaning setup only. It does not establish how long every configuration will last or why this unit filled faster.
Litter, cleaning and setup constraints
The owner reports litter and waste sticking to the inner wall and bottom, plus litter caught in gaps. The international manual specifies litter shorter than 12 mm and under 3 mm in diameter, and says litter should stay at or below the MAX line. Those conditions are relevant checks before attributing every sticking problem to the machine.
The manual requires a level surface with unobstructed access to the weight sensors. It also says to turn off or unplug the unit before removing the cylinder, wash the detached cylinder and sifter, wipe only the electronic base, and dry components fully before reassembly. The owner’s taped mat arrangement is not an official maintenance recommendation.
The owner found whole-unit cleaning difficult because the inner chamber had to be removed with litter still inside. The current manual includes an empty-litter function with a remover accessory, but the January 2022 account predates that instruction and should be read as a dated experience rather than evidence that the current setup is identical.
Sensors and automatic-cleaning timing
The owner reports false visits when the cat partly entered or stood on top of the machine, including a recorded weight of 3 kg. Because the owner links these events to the machine’s overall base weighing arrangement, buyers should allow for placement and sensor behavior to affect recorded visits; the source does not provide a controlled measurement of detection accuracy.
The reported false visits matter most when automatic cleaning is scheduled after every visit: a mistaken entry can shorten the delay before cleaning after a later real visit. The owner therefore connects the detection issue with a possible increase in cleaning while litter is still more likely to stick, but this remains a single-cat observation.
Regional model and safety checks
The international manual lists PURA MAX P9902 at 620 × 538 × 552 mm, with a 12 V, 24 W supply. It recommends a level surface, unobstructed sensor access and litter within the stated size limits. Check the exact regional label, power arrangement and accessory package before treating those specifications as applicable to a different market.
The UK PuraMax 2 with PURA Air is specified for cats weighing 1.5–10 kg, a hard level surface at least 5 cm from walls, litter no longer than 12 mm and a 7 L waste bin. It can operate preset settings without internet, but app data is not updated; support, app regions and accessories may differ elsewhere.
The manual does not recommend cats under six months or 1.5 kg. It describes an open entrance and automatic stopping, but those features do not establish zero injury risk. The owner’s suggestion of adding a stand to prevent the cat from standing on top is a personal idea, not an official fix.
