Google Fitbit Air: light hardware, frustrating sleep-data software after two months

I used Google Fitbit Air for two months: the light, long-lasting hardware impressed me, but repeated sync failures made checking sleep data frustrating.

After using it for two months, these were my negative impressions of the software

I experienced Google database synchronization problems several times.

I will not even get into needing a VPN or similar workaround. More recently, AI Coach also became unusable. I tried every method people shared on Xiaohongshu.

Several times, I got up in the morning wanting to check my sleep data. After loading repeatedly, the app said synchronization was complete, but the sleep information simply would not appear.

Several times, I could see the sleep information, but the detail page was empty when I opened it.

The current page design is a mess. Most of the features are useless; for me personally, most of the information is irrelevant.

To return to my only personal requirement—sleep tracking: with this software experience, I am genuinely considering selling it second-hand at any time.

After criticizing it so much, I still have to praise the hardware: it is light, barely noticeable, and has long battery life.

If anyone has used other wearables, have you encountered hardware that can match this one? Please share your suggestions.

Google sells the same Fitbit Air product family in the US and UK. This owner's two-month experience focuses on whether Google Health reliably displays sleep records, making the app and account conditions central to the buying decision.

The owner’s main problem was access to sleep data

The owner’s two-month account centers on sleep tracking rather than a broad fitness review. They describe repeated synchronization failures, including mornings when the app reported that syncing was complete but showed no sleep data, and occasions when the sleep summary opened without any detail. This is a reported software experience, not a measurement of the sensor’s sleep accuracy.

Fitbit Air syncing requires Bluetooth LE, internet access and location permission. The owner did not isolate the cause of the failures, so check those conditions before assuming missing app records mean the band recorded nothing overnight.

Light hardware does not remove the software trade-off

The hardware still appealed to the owner: light, unobtrusive and long-lasting. Google's US specifications list 12 g with the band, 5.2 g without it and up to seven days of battery life.

For this owner, those hardware advantages could not make up for missing morning sleep reports. If sleep tracking is your main goal, include the daily app workflow in your evaluation, especially whether you can open the detailed records after syncing.

Check Coach availability before relying on it

The owner reports that AI Coach became unusable and that they tried methods shared by other Xiaohongshu users. Google’s official support list includes the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Italy and other countries, but not mainland China or Hong Kong. The evidence therefore confirms a regional availability limitation, not the specific cause of the owner’s failure.

Google Health Coach is a Google Health Premium feature for adults with a Fitbit or Pixel Watch, and Google describes it as informational guidance rather than medical advice. It can log meals and workouts using text, photos or files, but AI may make mistakes; buyers should confirm local eligibility and should not use it as a substitute for medical guidance.

The app experience matters as much as the band

The owner considers the current interface cluttered and says that most of its information is personally irrelevant. That is an individual usability judgment, but it matters because their stated purpose is narrow: checking sleep data. Anyone choosing Fitbit Air for that same purpose should treat the app and account experience as part of the purchase, rather than evaluating the lightweight hardware alone.
